RUGGED SILICON OSCILLATORS:Silicon Oscillators

Linear Technology’s new LTC™6905 silicon oscillator sets a new standard for integrated timing solutions. Unlike crystal oscillators, the solid-state LTC6905 does not rely on mechanical resonating elements, giving it high immunity to acceleration, shock, and vibration. It also features a fast clean startup, operation over -40°C to +125°C, and low power consumption, making it ideal for many applications including USB, RS-232, I2C and SPI-based systems. This tiny SOT-23 device is available in a range of fixed-frequency versions (LTC6905-xxx) and a programmable-frequency version (LTC6905).

The LTC6905-xxx fixed frequency oscillators are simple and accurate; they require no external trim components and achieve a maximum frequency error of ±1.5% with stability of 20ppm/°C. A three-state divider pin enables division of the master clock frequency by 1, 2, or 4. This provides the ability to slow the clock to save system power, and enables these products to cover popular frequencies from 20MHz to 133MHz.

The LTC6905 programmable frequency device uses a single resistor, RSET, and a three-state divider pin to generate frequencies from 17MHz to 170MHz. A proprietary feedback loop maintains a precise relationship between RSET and the master frequency. Using a 0.1% accurate external RSET resistor typically achieves better than 0.6% accuracy from 0°C to 70°C and a temperature coefficient of 20ppm/°C.

Available now, the LTC6905 is part of a broader family of Linear Technology oscillators covering a frequency range of 1kHz to 170MHz.

Robust Operation: The LTC6905 is able to withstand from shock, vibration and extreme temperature ranges, making these parts ideal for automotive, industrial and military applications
Frequency Programmability: With the LTC6905, one resistor sets any frequency in the oscillator’s operating range of 17MHz to 170MHz
Fixed Frequency Selection: The LTC6905-xxx fixed frequency parts require no frequency setting resistor and cover the most commonly used clock frequencies above 20MHz. This includes 133MHz, 100MHz, 96MHz, 80MHz, 67MHz, 50Mz, 48MHz, 40MHz, 33.3MHz, 25MHz, 24MHz, and 20MHz
Accuracy: The LTC6905 typically achieves better than 0.6% accuracy from 0 to 70°C and a temperature coefficient of 20ppm/°C. The accuracy of the LTC6905 is similar to that of ceramic-based oscillators and is well-suited for most applications, including asynchronous serial (RS232), USB, SPI and I2C
Low Power Operation: The LTC6905 operates with a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply and has typical current draw of 6mA at 100MHz. A crystal-based oscillator can require up to 45mA for the same frequency
Fast Startup: The LTC6905 has a typical startup time of 100µsec. In contrast, crystal or ceramic resonator based oscillators typically have a startup time of 2-20msec and can exhibit pulse slivers or runt pulses upon startup. Furthermore, since crystal oscillators rely on a tuned circuit with a matched driver, they don’t always start up as planned or oscillate at the intended frequency. Even the same crystal circuit can start up differently from one cycle to the next
Superb Waveform: The LTC6905 features outstanding jitter, rise/fall time, and duty cycle providing an exceptionally “clean” square-wave. Jitter is typically less than 50ps at 170MHz, duty cycle is 50%+/-2.5% and rise/fall times are 500ps

The robust operation of the LTC6905 makes it ideal for rugged environmental conditions in automotive, industrial and military applications
A single programmable oscillator can replace multiple fixed frequency devices, eliminating long lead times and high prices for nonstandard clocks. Programmability also provides flexibility. Frequency adjustments can be made late in a design cycle or during production calibration. Programmability provides functionality not available with a standard oscillator
The fixed frequency devices require no adjustments and can be suitable replacements for commonly used can oscillators
Frequency programmability enables for operation as a voltage controlled or current controlled oscillator. This can be useful for sinewave generators, switched-capacitor filters, instrumentation and other novel applications
With a typical current draw of 6mA, the LTC6905 is an excellent replacement for more power hungry can-type oscillators
The fast, clean startup of the LTC6905 eliminates the headache of managing runt pulses, slivers or long startup delays common with other oscillators
The LTC6905 is ideal for synchronization circuitry, or double-duty type applications where minimum pulse width requirements are guaranteed by the excellent duty cycle and jitter control
