TCP/IP Development Kit
Web Server Developmental Reference Design
Engineering Solutions Platform

The TCP/IP Development Kit provides all the tools necessary to develop a robust 10Base-T Ethernet application, including a hardware platform based on the high-performance Renesas 16-bit H8S/2329 microprocessor, the Renesas Embedded Workshop development suite, the CMX MicroNet® TCP/IP Stack from CMX Systems Inc., and the XMK RTOS Kernal and TCP/IP (uIP) stack source code from Shift-Right Technologies.

CMX-MicroNet® is a TCP/IP implementation designed to work with processors that have a small amount of ROM and RAM. CMX-MicroNet® supports up to 127 sockets using TCP or UDP (TCP and UDP can be used at the same time). All 127 sockets can be Ethernet or PPP/SLIP sockets, but cannot support a mix of PPP and SLIP sockets at the same time. An HTTP Web server, FTP server, SMTP client and DHCP client are also available. The RS232 link, if used, can either be a direct cable link or through a modem.

Shift-Right Technologies provides a free open source RTOS eXtreme Minimal Kernel (XMK). XMK is a 100% free, pre-emptive multi-threaded real-time operating system for microcontrollers. XMK’s primary design goal is to be extremely small, without sacrificing performance or functionality. XMK’s minimal footprint makes it ideal for running on 8bit microcontrollers, while its feature content makes it a excellent choice for 16bit and 32bit microcontrollers. uIP is one of several free TCP/IP stacks integrated into the XMK Operating System. The uIP TCP/IP stack makes it possible to connect to a TCP/IP network such as the global Internet, without sacrificing interoperability or RFC standards compliance.

The Renesas Embedded Workshop is a powerful development environment for embedded applications targeted at Renesas microcontrollers. The main features are:

  • A configurable build engine, which allows you to set-up compiler, assembler and linker options via an easy to use interface
  • An integrated text editor
  • Version control support
  • Attach other specially designed Renesas Embedded Workshop extensions such as Renesas Debugging Interface

The development board included in the kit allows for immediate evaluation and development of TCP/IP applications using the Renesas H8/S 2329 microprocessor and the SMSC 91C96 Ethernet MAC with integrated Phy. Executable code can be downloaded into the H8/S 2329 internal flash memory for immediate evaluation on the development board. Three communication ports are available: two RS-232 ports (one for possible modem I/F) and a RS-485 port. Other features of the Nu Horizons TCP/IP development board include:

  • 4 Mb of DRAM from ISSI
  • 6 channels of Analog to Digital conversion with
    temperature sensor and potentiometer
  • Digital I/O test headers status LEDs
  • Interface to the Horizons Bus and optional Xilinx
    Virtex2 FPGA development board
  • Access to the Xilinx XCR3128XL and dual 7 segment LCD display for further system development
  • Multiple test point headers
  • Renesas-UDI Emulator port connector.
