| Intelligent Thermal Management |
| |
| |
With almost a decade of experience in designing thermal management solutions for industry leading companies in the computing and consumer markets, SMSC offers a breadth of expertise and an extensive product offering in temperature measurement and fan control. Employing the latest industry concepts such as Resistance Error Correction, the transistor model with Beta Compensation and revolutions per minute (RPM) fan drive for fan speed maintenance, our solutions increasingly improve measurement accuracy and save engineering time. |
| |
| Temperature Sensor Highlights: |
| |
Highly accurate measurement techniques allow for 1ºC accuracy |
| |
Resistance Error Correction and Beta Compensation minimize measurement errors |
| |
Unique features such as Anti-parallel Diodes and three sensors in a two-sensor package |
| |
|
| Temperature Sensor Features and Benefits |
| |
| Resistance Error Correction |
Corrects for series resistance effects that can occur for trace or substrate resistance. |
| Anti-parallel Diodes |
Allows two remote temperature monitors to occupy two pins providing for a compact footprint. |
| Ideality Configuration |
Compensates for the common error effect present in substrate diodes and discrete transistors. Improves BOM flexibility while maintaining accuracy. |
| Hottest of Zones |
A special register configured to report the hottest of several temperature readings. Makes it simple to poll all temperatures. |
| Beta Compensation |
Offsets small transistor geometry effects commonly present in substrate diodes of CPUs, GPUs and ASICs (45nm compatibility). |
|
| |
Fan Control Highlights |
|
SMSC designs thermal management solutions for most of the top-tier PC vendors worldwide. |
|
Provides additional reliability to a system’s thermal management by shifting the need for
constant supervision from the microprocessor. |
|
Lower acoustic noise can be attained with a fan control IC. Fan spin up noise reduction,
fan speed ramp rate limiting, and tracking fan speed to temperature are done without
extensive software overhead. |
|
The use of fan controllers shortens development time compared to microcontroller
software solutions. |
| |
| Fan Control Features and Benefits |
| High-Frequency Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) |
Compatible with four wire fans and above what a human ear can detect as switching noise. |
| Fan Speed Ramp Rate Control |
Limits quick changes and sudden increases in fan speed that are easily detected as audible noise. |
| Multi-Temperature Control |
One fan can be controlled by up to three temperature measurement zones, centralizing control for greater accuracy. |
| RPM Closed-Loop Control |
Maintains speed over the life of the product. The effect is to maintain a constant cooling level for a given temperature. |
