NU
HORIZONS ANNOUNCES FIRST MODULAR DEVELOPMENT SOLUTION
FOR DESIGN ENGINEERS FEATURING XILINX FPGAs
MELVILLE,
NEW YORK and SAN JOSE, CALIF., February 4, 2002 -- Nu Horizons Electronics Corp. (NASDAQ:NUHC) and Xilinx,
Inc., (NASDAQ:XLNX), today announced the immediate availability
of the Engineering Solutions Platform, a high-end modular
development solution based on Xilinx®Virtex®-II
FPGAs, designed to shorten product development times,
lower costs and improve product quality. Unlike traditional
stand alone board solutions, the new Platform consists
of a highly functional main board that has the ability
to add up to two additional application specific development
cards, providing design engineers with a modular hardware
platform to develop, prototype, verify and test designs
before they are finalized.
"The
Nu Horizon's Engineering Solutions Platform gives us a
tremendous and flexible solution for expediting designs
and time to market," said Rick Folea, manager, engineering
for Elastic Networks, Inc. "The well thought out
main board/development card design allows us to focus
on our design prototyping and not on re-creating entire
systems for each new design. Now we can just design a
small daughter card with a Xilinx FPGA of our choice and
everything else is taken care of. We can even compare
designs side by side or test the inter-relationship of
two independent designs in the same system since there
are two slots for development cards."
"This
is a totally new approach to system design development,"
said Arthur Nadata, CEO of Nu Horizons. "This evaluation
tool is different in that we offer a modular solution
of development boards -- everybody else requires you to
buy a new board for each device. The approach taken by
our competitors not only costs more money, but also requires
a new learning curve for each new stand-alone board. The
Engineering Solution Platform is a first for Nu Horizons,"
added Nadata, "and a first for the industry. It puts
us in a leadership position for engineering solutions
-- and adds another component to Nu Horizons being a total
solutions provider."
"System
architects and developers are looking for tools to help
them optimize their designs for cost and performance.
With the Nu Horizons Engineering Solutions Platform, multiple
chip designs & interoperability can now be done simultaneously,"
said Sandeep Vij, vice president of worldwide marketing
at Xilinx. "This modular platform is an industry
first, and represents yet another milestone in our relationship
with Nu Horizons."
Some
of the features of the main Engineering Solutions Platform
board include: Xilinx CoolRunner®CPLD; high density
board-to-board connectors for two expansion cards; dual
seven segment LCD display; RS232 level shifter for UART
core instantiation; JTAG configuration headers; two 44
pin PLCC sockets for Xilinx configuration PROM's; 50 test
points; power management; reset controller; and status
LEDs.
Targeted
at high-end data communications, networking, wireless
base-stations, mass storage, video servers, signal processing
and Internet infrastructure products, the first available
development card focuses on one million gate Xilinx Virtex-II
FPGAs. Some of the many features implemented on the Virtex-II
FPGA board include: support of Xilinx MicroBlaze soft
processor core; logic resources; select RAM memory; 16
channels of LVDS interface supporting 840Mb/s; multiprotocol
serial clock/data transceivers with auto cable termination;
16 Megabits of Synchronous NBT SRAM; programmable clock
from 1 MHz to 200 MHz; 6 user clock inputs; high speed
133bit @ 200 MHz back plane; and Digitally Controlled
Impedance. Future development cards will include an HTML
server-white appliance controller and a high-speed Analog
Front End with an Ethernet I/F.
