Nu
Horizons Electronics Corp. Announces Dedicated Portal
to Address Lead Free Directives Restricting the Use of
Hazardous Substances
Informative Online Resource to Help Nu Horizons Customers
with Lead-Free Initiatives
Melville,
New York - March 4, 2004 - Nu Horizons Electronics Corp. (NASDAQ:NUHC), a leading
distributor of high technology active components, today
announced the creation of a dedicated web portal providing
the most up to date information on the development of
lead-free component products available from its suppliers.
This portal, accessible at http://www.nuhorizons.com/lead-free,
is designed to aid Nu Horizons' customers in preparation
for the European Union (EU) electronic industry directives
restricting the use of hazardous substances, such as lead
(Pb), in the manufacture of all electrical and electronic
equipment.
"The
electronic industry's progression toward utilizing environmentally-sensitive
technology has become an increasing issue of concern for
our customers," states Dave Bowers, Nu Horizons executive
vice president of sales and marketing. "In response
to their inquiries, Nu Horizons has developed this lead-free
portal as a one-stop resource center of information to
assist in obtaining compliance directives for all of our
franchised suppliers."
Nu
Horizons' portal offers detailed information on environmentally
friendly processes that adhere to EU mandates, in addition
to providing information on the availability of lead-free
products within the company's franchised supplier base.
Updated frequently, this portal administers direct links
to all supplier websites addressing this topic, as well
as pertinent industry and environmental reference organizations.
The use of Pb has long been recognized as a harmful environment
pollutant. OEM initiatives and legislation are being implemented
globally to drive the removal of Pb and other harmful
materials from electronic products as a result of the
edicts of two EU directives: the Restriction on Hazardous
Substances (RoHS), addressing the use of certain materials
in electrical and electronic equipment, and the Waste
from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) which
also has significant implications for all manufacturers.
The final deadline for compliance is decreed for July
1, 2006.
