Processing capabilities provide performance and customization across a wide range of end markets including: aerospace and defense, wired and wireless communications, automotive, audio/video broadcast, industrial control, test and measurement, and consumer.

 

MicroBlaze Soft Processor

The MicroBlaze core is a flexible 32-bit Harvard RISC architecture with a rich instruction set optimized for embedded applications in Xilinx FPGAs. MicroBlaze architecture features control over cache sizes, interfaces, and execution units. The soft processor nature of MicroBlaze makes it very customizable. You can trade features for size to meet price and performance goals.

The MicroBlaze core is licensed as part of the Embedded Development Kit EDK.

With the MicroBlaze soft processor, you never pay royalties and your processing solution never becomes obsolete. MicroBlaze even integrates a low-latency IEEE-754 compatible Floating Point Unit (FPU).

PicoBlaze Soft Processor

PicoBlaze is a compact and cost effective fully embedded 8-bit microcontroller core. PicoBlaze is provided as a source-level VHDL file with royalty-free use in Xilinx FPGAs and CPLDS, so it is immune to product obsolescence.

This core requires no external resources; it is totally embedded within the FPGA. Because it is so small, many applications can implement multiple PicoBlaze iterations to address simple or sophisticated tasks.

Xilinx Intellectual Property for Embedded Design

The Xilinx pre-verified processor system IP catalog includes a wide variety of processing peripheral cores for customizing your embedded systems. Source drivers are included for all IP.

 

PowerPC Hard Processor

The IBM PowerPC 405 core is a hard 32-bit RISC CPU core immersed directly into the Xilinx FPGA fabric to implement high performance embedded applications. The combination of dual hard PowerPC core systems integrated with co-processing capability enables a wide range of performance optimization options.

The PowerPC is supported in both the Virtex™-4 and Virtex-II Pro families of Xilinx Platform FPGAs and integrates a scalar 5-stage pipeline, separate instruction and data caches, a JTAG port, trace FIFO, multiple timers and a memory management unit (MMU).  The Virtex-4 devices implement an Auxiliary Processor Unit controller (APU) which enables direct connect co-processing of hardware instructions in the FPGA fabric.

Embedded Design Tools

Intelligent, platform-aware tools simplify design and accelerate the embedded development process. Automated wizards walk engineers through the design process to reduce errors and ease learning curves.

The Xilinx Embedded Development Kit (EDK) includes the Platform Studio tool suite as well as all the documentation and IP required for designing embedded applications with Xilinx platform FPGAs and embedded PowerPC and/or MicroBlaze soft processor cores.
